Night expeditions open up rare fishing catches and salvaging opportunities, but the risk profile is much higher than daytime. The stranger fish varieties surface after dark in the same named zones visited during the day, which is why night runs are the main route to the top trader payouts — but they also bring tentacle encounters at about twice the day rate in the demo and more aggressive scripted monster attacks on land.

Preparation checklist
Tick every item before leaving the dock:
- Hull Armor upgraded — at least Hull Armour (Mk I) installed.
- Fuel tank full — faster engines burn more, so plan a margin.
- Antidote stocked — for toxic zones after dark.
- Blood Pack stocked — for mid-fight emergencies.
- Stamina Salve stocked — for long fishing line fights.
- At least one elemental harpoon ready — Fire or Toxic for flesh, Plague for leviathan-class.
- Route plotted to a settlement dock or barricaded finish line.
The checklist is not optional for night runs. Entering the dark without preparation is the most common way expeditions end badly.
Threat escalation
Threats escalate in three concrete ways after dark:
- Water. Tentacle encounters surface about twice as often in the demo, and night-only stranger fish appear in the same named zones that were quiet during the day. For the named zones that hold these catches, see the DREADMOOR rare fish locations guide.
- Land. Scripted monster attacks are more aggressive — barricading at settlement locations becomes a required activity, not an optional one.
- Trade-off. Rare catches are easy to find at night, but the night roster includes the predators that contest your line, so harpoon choice and medicine stock carry more weight than the day-time catch plan.
Settlement dock as finish line
Plot the run to end at a settlement dock
Plot the run to end at a settlement dock — the dock is the safe anchor and the trader on site.
Plot to a barricaded location if no settlement is reachable
If no settlement is reachable, plot to a barricaded location instead; do not anchor in the open water after dark.
